As optical coherence tomography (OCT) technology continues to advance, it has an ever-increasing impact on the treatment of eye disease and the way anatomy and pathology are viewed.
Keeping pace with this evolving technology can be challenging. To help, here’s a look at the latest advances from key players in the OCT category.
HEIDELBERG ENGINEERING
SYSTEM: Spectralis SD-OCT
► WHAT’S NEW: The cutting-edge advancements for Heidelberg’s Spectralis platform include the OCT Angiography Module, High Magnification Module, and Glaucoma Module Premium Edition with the new Hood Glaucoma Report. All advancements are available via upgrades to Spectralis diagnostic imaging devices. Additionally, a Spectralis with the latest OCT2 Module has been successfully installed and is operational on the International Space Station. Heidelberg Engineering continuously optimizes imaging and healthcare information technologies to provide ophthalmic diagnostic solutions that empower clinicians to improve patient care.
NIDEK
SYSTEM: RS-3000 Advance
► WHAT’S NEW: The RS-3000 Advance wide-area, high-definition OCT with SLO tracing provides a 12-mm wide horizontal scan to allow detailed observation of the vitreous body, retina and choroid — from macula to optic disc — in a single image. The system can capture a 9-mm x 9 mm image centering around the macula. By selecting sensitivity based on pathology, images can be captured with higher definition or at a higher speed. Features include tracing HD plus and torsion eye tracer for accurate image capture, a multifunctional follow-up function and follow-up image capture. Modes for retina, glaucoma, and anterior segment analysis are available.
OPTOS
SYSTEMS: Monaco, Daytona, and California
► WHAT’S NEW: Launched in 2018, Monaco combines ultra-widefield (UWF) optomap images with 40° SD-OCT scans. Monaco produces a six-image overview that shows color and autofluorescence optomaps and OCT scans of both eyes in as few as two minutes.
Monaco also features the OptosCloud, a secure, convenient, economical option for storing and reviewing images and diagnostic reports.
Optomap meets the definition of ultra-widefield established by the International Widefield Imaging Study Group as encompassing retinal anatomy anterior to the vortex ampullae in all four quadrants.
OPTOVUE
SYSTEMS: Avanti Widefield OCT with AngioVue OCT Angiography, iVue OCT, iScan OCT, Vivicon Fundus Camera
► WHAT’S NEW: The AngioWellness exam utilizes Optovue’s AngioVue OCTA technology with AngioAnalytics OCTA metrics to quickly assess and diagnose new pathologies in patients, including diabetics and those who may be at risk for glaucoma. AngioWellness combines structural information on retinal and ganglion cell thickness with objective metrics on retinal vasculature into one easy-to-read report. The patient-monitoring tool was designed to help eye-care professionals offer a comprehensive eye exam, differentiate the practice with state-of-the-art technology, and identify patients who may need monitoring or medical eye care.
TOPCON
SYSTEMS: 3D OCT-1 Maestro and Swept Source DRI OCT Triton
► WHAT’S NEW: Topcon recently received FDA approval for the Swept Source DRI Triton, a swept source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) device. It scans quickly (100,000 A-scans per second) using a 1050-nm wavelength and consistently produces clear, high-quality images — even in the presence of challenging anatomical conditions.
More recently, Topcon rolled out its newest SD-OCT system: the 3D OCT-1 Maestro. With a single touch, it automatically scans both eyes and produces an SD-OCT scan and true-color fundus image simultaneously. Auto-alignment, auto-focus, and auto-shoot ensure that the whole process is done fast and correctly. Images can be captured in standing or sitting positions.
ZEISS
SYSTEMS: Zeiss Cirrus 5000, Cirrus 500, Cirrus photo 600, Cirrus photo 800. Only Cirrus 5000/500 offer epithelial thickness mapping (ETM). Primus 200 is available outside the United States, and Plex Elite 9000 is available globally for researchers.
► WHAT’S NEW: Zeiss Medical Technology Segment has received 510(k) clearance from the FDA for the Cirrus HD-OCT platform, expanding the capabilities of its Anterior Segment Premier Module to include ETM.
ETM with Cirrus provides a detailed 9-mm map of epithelial thickness that enables more thorough assessment of patients before refractive surgery, allows monitoring of the cornea’s response to treatment, and aids in managing patients with ocular surface disorders, such as dry eye, and progressive corneal diseases, such as keratoconus. With ETM, patients can expect a quick, comfortable non-contact exam that takes less than a second. OP
