MAXIMIZE EFFICIENCY AND ACQUIRE ACCURATE MEASUREMENTS
Five tips for operating an autorefractor
By Sue Corwin, CO, COMT
While today’s autorefractors have been designed so that the ophthalmic professional can operate them with even a limited knowledge of refractometry, the following tips can aid in efficient, accurate operation of the devices.
- Place the autorefractor in a dimly-lit area. The larger the pupil, the easier it is to obtain a measurement.
- Ask the patient to blink several times before measuring the eye. A clean, reflective tear film allows for the best measurement.
- Instruct the patient to open both eyes widely and look at the target. Each autorefractor has a specific target for the patient to keep their eyes aligned, and opening the eyes gets the lids out of the way for a better reading.
- Use the line guide (outer canthus mark) on the side of the headrest for patient alignment. Be sure the patient’s forehead and chin are against the rests. Ask for help in keeping the patient’s head steady in the unit if necessary.
- Look at the printout obtained from the autorefractor to determine the repeatability and reliability of the measurements. Compare the cylinder values on the autorefractor data to the cylinder value of the “K” reading value.
